The images I capture are a way to pause a moment in time; a way to remember things as they were. Almost exactly 1 year ago I was visiting family and friends in Iowa for my parents’ 35th anniversary. We planned a picture day and I was (of course) the photographer. I enjoyed the day so much. My family was relaxed and just hanging out and enjoying each other. When I saw my Grandpa laugh I grabbed my camera and got a quick shot of him. I don’t remember what he was laughing at but I do remember thinking, “I got him!” I captured a true picture of my Grandpa enjoying the day and loving his family. It is one of my favorite pictures.
Tonight, about 2 hours ago, my Grandpa passed away. He lived a full life; he was an extremely hard worker. He loved to garden, to sharpen tools, and to smoke his pipe. Earlier today his favorite singing group from church came to sing his favorite songs to him while he was in his hospice bed. He was so loved. Tonight he was surrounded by loving friends and family. I am so thankful and feel so blessed to know and learn from my Grandpa.
I am also thankful for this image, this glimpse in time. A time to remember the laughs, smiles, and joys of the day. I’m thankful for my Grandpa.
